KALACHAKRA INITIATION
Although the Kalachakra Tantra is meant for practitioners of the highest faculty, it also has a special connection with all the people of this planet. For that reason, the Initiation is traditionally given openly, giving ordinary people the opportunity to establish a karmic link with Kalachakra. The Kalachakra Initiation is given over twelve days, the first eight of which are preparation rituals during which time the monks construct the sand mandala. The Initiation begins with the Ritual Offering Dance, prayers and music to subdue all interfering spirits. After the dance His Holiness begins the Initiation and the students take a vow to have compassion toward all living things and to work for the benefit of others. The Dalai Lama thanks the spirits and deities for their co-operation by making offerings to them. The monks play sacred music with bells, gongs, drums and 12ft long horns. Each student receives a red blindfold to show that they are not yet spiritually enlightened. The Dalai Lama then asks Kalachakra to open the students eyes. At the end of the Initiation the students will be enlightened and are allowed to view the sand mandala. The ceremony ends when the monks release the positive energy of the mandala into the everyday world through a final ritual.
The Initiation is the granting of authority to practice the Tantra. The Dalai Lama leads the Initiation and is known as the Vajra Master. Since the Tantra lives through direct transmission by the Vajra Master, the initiation fulfils the Vajra Master’s pledge to pass on the Tantra without diminishing it in any way, always for the benefit of all sentient beings.
